By now I'm sure most of you have heard about The Beer Belly, which is one of the latest additions to Albany's restaurant scene on New Scotland Avenue. The Beer Belly is a beer centric restaurant with a wide variety of beers and a modest menu.
I stopped by their soft opening a few months back, but wasn't able to get a good sense of their menu and the rest of the restaurant, so I was excited when a couple of friends and I decided to stop in for dinner one night.
We started with the 2.8.1 Board, aka The Butcher and The Cheese, which was piled with a generous assortment of delicious cheeses, meats, and veggies.
The bread that accompanied the board was presented in this cute little pot, however the bread itself was a little...underwhelming. It was a bit too chewy for my liking, I would have enjoyed some crispy crostinis instead.
The board definitely had a nice variety, but not knowing what each item was was a little disappointing to me. I like to know what I'm eating and I think they should either write what each cheese and meat is on the board itself or print out a list to reference so customers have a better idea.
In addition to the the board we ordered two more items.
We couldn't pass up the hot pretzel with cheddar -n- chive cheese sauce, so we ordered it and I also asked for a side of the ipa mustard. I enjoyed both dipping sauces for different reasons, but I think the cheddar & chive cheese sauce was my favorite.
I was really excited for The Valtellina salad which is an air cured thin sliced beef with arugula, shaved parmesan, lemon, and olive oil. It was very simple and lite, which isn't a bad thing, but I was a bit unimpressed. In my personal opinion, it was lacking in the flavor department. I kept thinking it would have been better with a drizzle of truffle oil.
All in all, I enjoyed my visit to The Beer Belly. It's has a great atmosphere with a lot of beer to choose from. Next time I go I'll be sure it's early enough to enjoy some of their $1 oysters!
